I ♥ Arcade Fire!!!!

novembre 05, 2013

Arcade Fire released their latest album Reflektor last week. This will sound geeky, but they’re my favourite. Yup, I’m biased, but I’m also a reasonable person. If I didn’t like the album, would I write about it here? No.

Reflektor sounds like eighties music meets fifties rock meets Radiohead… Huh? Well if you never listened to Arcade Fire before, then there’s no real way to perfectly describe their music, since it’s like nothing else out there. ITunes has Arcade Fire under the “alternative” category, which pleads my case. They’re unique in so many ways. Back in 2006, I bought their album Funeral because the songs were so catchy and original, I couldn’t help but fall in love. Ever since, I’ve been a loyal fan, buying all their albums and following all their updates. However, I must add, I’m not a lucky fan. Arcade Fire is notorious for their secret underground concerts with limited tickets. I know a handful of lucky people who got to see them intimately, but I can’t complain either. I saw them live at a surprise free concert in Longueuil in June 2010, then at Osheaga that August, and once again in September 2011, when they played a free outdoor concert in the Quartier des Spectacles.

This latest album had a lot of hype surrounding it, especially since the band won a Grammy with their last album The Suburbs in 2011. There’s always that fear that your favourite band might disappoint you, and thankfully, this isn’t the case. Each song on Reflektor is fantastic, and the album as a whole is really well done. I read in many reviews that the band was influenced by Regine Chassagne’s home country of Haiti, and it’s true. The rhythm and sounds of some songs (like “Flashbulb Eyes” and “Here comes the night”) are clearly inspired by Caribbean beats. Other songs are simply Arcade Fire treasures, like “It’s never over (Oh Orpheus)”, “Supersymmetry” and their latest single “Afterlife.”

I’m really happy with Reflektor, I can’t stop listening to it! Can’t wait for their next concert. I hope I hear about it before it’s too late.
