Give a little bit! #ShoeboxLove

décembre 03, 2013

Food banks across the city help those in need all year long, and Christmas time is when the need is greatest. Many of us are lucky to share copious meals with family and friends. Our Christmas stockings are filled with nic-nacs, and there are beautifully wrapped presents sitting under the perfect tree. Christmas is always a time when we have this need to do more: eat more, please more, party more. Except, not all of us have the luxury to do so. Now is the time when many feel isolated, as they cannot meet the expectations that are brought upon us by the holiday season.

I think we all can make a difference when it comes to helping others. Students at the high school where I work recently inspired me. In the month of October, they were able to collect over 2500 non-perishable food items for needy families in the community. During the holidays, there are many companies and associations that collect canned goods for the needy. Food banks and charities are often the only source of food for many people in need. No matter what socio-economic background, everyone should get to celebrate more at Christmas time.

I was reading about the shoebox project (the one put together by the Samaritan’s Purse, an international charity that supports families in the poorest countries.Read about here).

However, I stumbled upon a local shoebox initiative. “The Shoebox Project for Shelters” aims to give presents to women who live in difficult situations. Often, the recipients of these gifts haven’t received any gift in years due to financial distress. How does the project work? You basically fill up a shoebox with lovely items (such as nail polish, gift cards, makeup, public transit tickets, etc.) for a value of up to approximately 50$. Decorate the shoebox (bling it up!) and drop it off at one of the project’s drop-off centers. They are situated all across Canada, and there are three in Montreal.             It’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of Christmas, but it’s important to help those who are in need. Take the time to spread some holiday cheer through a generous endeavor. It will likely feel even better than opening presents on Christmas morning!
