The Nutcraker market & a little downtown shopping too!

décembre 10, 2013

Shopping downtown in any city during the holidays has a special magical feeling that you can’t get in malls. * Tuesday confession: * I used to work downtown in a bookstore, and I LOVED working during the Christmas season! It was always so busy, but there’s (mostly) a good energy amongst the shoppers. I think downtown is just lovely at this time of year.

I got to check out the Nutcracker Market at Palais des Congrès recently. The beauty of shopping at a Christmas market is that you never know what you’ll find. As opposed to shopping in a big box store, where you know you’ll see pre-packaged perfume gift sets, discounted boxed chocolates, and sad boxing day signs (can they let us enjoy the season, please?) Christmas markets offer unique options sold by local artisans.

There were more kiosks than in the past, and they offered an interesting variety of options! My favorite was the Virevolt kiosk. I have a niece who loves to dance, and this was a ballerina’s paradise! From tu-tus to ornaments, dance threads and slipper-charms, there was everything for a little dancer to love.

Other kiosks included designer chocolates, beautiful jewelry, an assortment of locally produced alcohol, and scarves made from precious llama wool. Prices varied from reasonable to out-of-my-budget, but there really was something for everyone.

If you didn’t get a chance to check it out this year, I suggest you stop by next year. A portion of all sales goes the Nutcracker’s children foundation.

I know I just mentioned that big box stores could be annoying during the holidays, but allow me to contradict myself a little as I have a weak spot for The Bay.

Maybe it’s the history-teacher side of me, but there’s something about this old company that makes me happy to shop there. Every year, my mom and I head up to the seventh floor of the Bay downtown, and spend hours admiring their Christmas decorations for sale.

It really feels like they go all out to inspire you to buy their stuff, and it works! We always end up buying the cutest ornaments. This year, I was REALLY impressed by their Lord & Taylor collection. Everything is so colourful and tacky… much like myself!
