Happy International Women’s Day!

mars 11, 2014

For the occasion, Lancome Canada was offering a rose to any woman who sat down for a little touch-up. The rose is a symbol of strength and beauty, very much comparable to any woman in your life, I’m sure. The rose de France also happens to be Lancome’s logo, and an ingredient in all of their cosmetics and perfumes.

It was nice to be pampered a tiny bit, and receiving flowers is always appreciated. However, Women’s Day isn’t about make-up and gifts. It’s a time to reflect upon and appreciate women’s place in the world. Where would the world be without women? Without dwelling on the obvious reproductive role, the world would be missing a mother’s strength and a feminine touch. There would be no one to understand you the way a sister does, and there wouldn’t be little girls to steal your heart. Women are important. Women are inspiring. Women bring balance.

The woman who inspires me the most is my mom. I’ve often mentioned here just how close we are. She’s totally my best friend. She left her family in the Philippines at age 23 to work as a nanny in Iran. In 1979, the revolution forced her to choose a safer country to work in. Soon after arriving in Canada, she met my dad while bowling. When I was 3 years old, my mom was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disorder that leads to chronic pain and a daily cocktail of pills. I have always admired her strength and her kindness with others, even when others might not merit such a gentle attitude. She continues to inspire me everyday to be courageous, patient, loving, and kind.

I’m also inspired by women who follow their dreams, and work hard to achieve them. I’m lucky to have such an inspiring friend in my life: Alexis! I always liked her fearlessness in liking what she liked, and going after what she wanted. She uses her life to inspire others, and it works. This blog is a testament to her hard work and dedication to following her dream, and I am proud to see her living her life exactly as she dreamed it should be.

I hope you all take the time to think about the wonderful women in your lives J.
