Saint-Joseph's zeppole: a springtime treat!‏

#StJoeDay

One of the things many people look forward to in March is the celebration of Saint-Patrick’s Day (green beer, green parade, green fun!), but have you ever celebrated Saint-Joseph? If you’re Italian, then you most likely have heard of San Giuseppe, and now I’ll share with you all the sweetest thing about this day: le zeppole.

March 19th is the name day of Joseph. I’m not going to dwell on the man himself, but I can tell you that this day brings a lot of excitement to fans of this seasonal treat. A zeppola is fried dough, filled with yummy sweet ricotta or delicious custard. They’re covered in powdered sugar, and topped with a cherry. It’s kinda like a doughnut, but Italian, and better. What makes it better? Well, maybe it’s because bakeries only make them in March. Its scarcity makes them exciting and special. Typically, you’ll share some with a Joseph (or a Giuseppe) on that day. However, it’s really just an excuse; you can eat one with whomever you want.

To be honest, no description and no photo will convince you of its uniqueness. You must try one yourself! One bite of this soft delicious dessert will make you name your next child Joe!

Little anecdote: at the school where I work, we always celebrate St-Patrick’s Day and St-Joseph’s Day by serving Irish coffee and zeppole to all staff members at the end of the day. This year, there was a possibility of not having the zeppole, and some people literally threatened to not participate in the gathering. Zeppole are serious business! (We’re having some; crisis averted.)

You’ll find zeppole at any Italian bakery this month, but hurry. Once they’re gone, you’ll have to wait ‘til next year to have one! (Ok no, you can always order them, but you won’t find them readily available and waiting for you in the month of July. So just go now!).
