Yes, even if the ground is still frozen, it’s time to start thinking about your summer herbs. You get a certain kind of satisfaction in using ingredients you grew yourself as opposed to buying them in stores, and it’s easy to do too.

All you need is a bag of earth (the kind that’s filled with nutrients, but nothing fancy) a few containers and some seeds. You’ll also need a spot that’s warm and sunny, and a watering can. (Gardener’s confession: I think watering cans are so charming. They come in all shapes and sizes, and for some reason, I love browsing through the different ones in stores and online. Hey, some people like teacups… I like watering cans. Oh well!)
This year, I’m growing basil, cilantro, dill, and chives. I also fell upon a packet of mini squash seeds that is perfect for container gardening. I figured I’d give it a try. Most of these seeds indicate that they should be planted 4-6 weeks before the last frost. In our climate, it’s kind of hard to predict, but I’d say now is about right. Once you’ve planted your seeds, make sure to identify each container. It’s kind of awkward if you don’t know what plants are growing in what container.



Water is important. Make sure you keep the soil humid, and once your plants start growing, you’ll be able to gage how much or how little water you should be putting. If the conditions are right, your plants should start growing in the next few days. Welcome them to the world with a warm greeting. Don’t feel weird talking to your plants; they’ll show you their love back by growing strong and delicious!
