Do you remember your prom? As a high school teacher, I get
to go to prom every year and witness this right-of-passage for hundreds of
students. Every year, I reminisce about my own prom. I remember, it was 13
years ago and I was so excited. My friends and their dates all came to my house
to take pictures, and their parents came along for some celebratory champagne.
We looked so glamorous (or so we thought!) and it felt like we were going to
have the best night of our lives. In the end, it was alright (we ate, we
danced, we laughed) And really, that entire summer vacation was memorable for
me. Prom marks the end of high school, but really, it’s just the beginning of something better.
It’s the kind of thing you only realize in restrospect.

Anyway, what was your prom dress like? I still think I had a
nice dress; it had a classic cut and it was fire engine red. Looking back now,
it’s fun to laugh at the prom trends of the late 90s and early 2000s: the sheer
material, the tiaras, the chunky shoes… all terribly ugly today. Hollywood is
an obvious inspiration for prom. I remember 1999, when Gwyneth Paltrow won an
Oscar for her role in “Shakespeare in Love”. She wore a huge, shimmery pink
ball gown, with spaghetti straps and a shawl.
I said to my mom: “Mommy, I want a dress like that one!” Thankfully, I
found a different dress that I don’t regret at all, which would not have been
the case if I showed up to prom in spaghetti straps.

If you search for prom dresses today, they’re all quite
pretty and elegant. A trend that’s been picking up steam in the last few years is
the short gown. Rhinestones are also huge. The open back\open sides look are equally
popular. Girls seem to have it together, but maybe we did too. Time just isn’t
kind to the trendy.
What are your prom hits and misses? If I had to do it all again, I’d probably do my makeup
differently. I also would never have cut my hair short, at least not for 6
months before the big night. If you fish out your old photo album, you are
guaranteed to laugh at least once!
