Choosing a new smartphone: learning to let go #IPhone

août 13, 2014

A short disclaimer: The following is a recap of my experience in choosing a new smartphone. I don’t intend in any way to sway your decision in picking a new device :)

In 2011, I picked up my very first smartphone: the IPhone 4. This revolutionary phone at the time had a perfect camera and innovative Facetime capabilities. My husband (then boyfriend) had one himself, so I already knew what the phone was like and I loved it. I could not wait to get my very own! I was an Apple lover for life as soon as I opened the package.

Walking around with this eyesore until a few weeks ago.

Like most people, I used my IPhone for taking pictures on a daily basis, IMessaging my friends, and going on social media. Apple’s marketing techniques have a way of making you feel a part of a family. A really cool and hip family. I liked that a lot, as I’m sure most IPhone users do as well.

Fast forward to 2014. My phone, now a dinosaur compared to the latest models of IPhones and other smartphones on the market, was driving me insane. Because I had dropped it so many times, it wasn’t performing as fast as it should have. Also, my screen was cracked in several places. It was embarrassing to walk around with.  (Students would kindly point out: “Miss, you’re like a teenager!” … ugh.) My contract was coming to an end… What to do? Naturally, my instinct was to go for the latest Iphone. Why wouldn’t I? I loved the product and I was familiar with it. I never even questioned my choice. And isn’t it common knowledge that the IPhone is simply the best phone on the market?

Well, things have changed. My husband got himself an Android in 2012 because his IPhone had broken beyond repair. He loved it, and swore off Apple for the rest of his days. Meanwhile, I wouldn’t have it. AS IF his Android was better than an IPhone! After some heated arguments (let’s face it, I tried very stubbornly to stand my ground,) I decided to go in store and play with different phones.

I still love my Mac.
For the very first time, I held an Android in my hands (the Samsung S4), and I tried the camera immediately. To my surprise, it was so much better than what I expected, possibly even clearer than the IPhone 5. (The camera was my main selling point. As a blogger and a picture-taking-freak, the camera just had to be perfect.) To my even bigger surprise, the sales girl at the store was telling me that she had never owned an IPhone, and that she didn’t care for them because of the variety of products out there.

Could it be? A world where people DON’T like IPhones? I was in disbelief.

Let me cut to the chase. After playing with a device that wasn’t an IPhone, after doing my research, and after comparing prices, I just had to go with an Android. I couldn’t believe it myself. I don’t regret my choice, despite the teasing I get from my IPhone-using friends. The transition from IMessage to text message has been a little annoying, but that doesn’t matter. I discovered this subculture of Android users who quietly enjoy the many advantages that these devices have to offer. The amount of stress and time invested in choosing a new phone is a lot to handle. (Like, make a decision already!) I suggest you go about it with an open mind, and make sure you know your priorities (camera quality, budget, social status, etc.)

I pictured my parents' tomatoes with my new phone. The quality of the photo speaks for itself.

Of course, the newest version of the IPhone is about to be released (or so they say) and maybe it will be revolutionary once more. I just couldn’t wait any longer, and I’m happy I didn’t.

Have you ever made the switch? Would you?

  1. I also made the switch from iphone to Android (Samsung S3) and I LOVE IT! I google accounts for everything, so it's much more user friendly for me. I also broke my iPhone 3 times (yes, yes) and decided it was way to fragile for my lifestyle. Super happy with the switch, don't think I'd go back to iphone! enjoy your new toy!!
